Former Kano Residence (designated as an Ena City Cultural Property)

The Kano family were engaged in matchlock gunsmithing for three generations from the mid-19th century. The first master, Kano Denzaemon Kanefusa, began gunsmithing around 1831 at the request of Matsudaira Noriyasu, the sixth lord of Iwamura Domain. Records reveal the Kano made matchlock guns, while forging weapons such as spears, crowbars, and swords. Old documents show that in 1882 the extant building was roughly the same size as it is today, with a main house, storeroom, bathroom, and annex around it.

The building was donated to Ena City in 2011 then surveyed and restored for preservation. According to a wooden plaque discovered during the survey, the family was still blacksmiths and repairing guns in 1872. On display are matchlock guns manufactured by the Kano family’s first master, Kanefusa, wooden patterns for guns, shot, and old documents such as order forms left behind by the Kano family.
